Mosaic Optometry has been in the Crown Isle Plaza for 10 years now! Thank you to all our valued patients who have supported us over the years.

  • Yes, of course. Our staff is trained in frame selection. We take into consideration how the lenses will be used in a new frame, and what they’ll look like. We pay attention to how the frame will fit. We keep our inventory up to date with a variety of new and classic styles. We also carry a wide variety of non-prescription sunglasses. We have a comprehensive selection of lens treatments, including scratch resistance and photochromic darkening (Transitions). As well, we carry certified safety frames and lenses.

We are able to submit claims for dozens of different insurance plans.

  • If you’ve been assessed for contact lenses, we will either have a contact lens prescription for you, or we will be having you try some other contact lenses (in which case some follow-up is necessary). If you haven’t done so already, give us a call to order your contact lenses at 250-338-1665, or keep up with the optometrist’s recommendation for a subsequent evaluation or feedback.

  • You optometrist will have given you some instructions on how treat you irritated eyes, but it is easy to forget the recommendatons.

Most treatments involve the following steps, which anyone can do without risk of harm:

    1. Warm compresses. These are to be done nightly, before sleeping, and in many cases more often t an that. The heat and pressure are necessary to stimulate the glands within the eyelids that produce natural lubrication for your eyes. For many people, this is a chronic condition and the compresses should be performed routinely, just like brushing teeth. You can use a hot damp washcloth for this, but the treatment is much more effective with a heating pad made for the eyes, like a Therapearl mask or an i-Relief mask. If you’ve been instructed to do this, make sure to follow through. This is a simple step which might actually be the best treatment, but it is easy to forget.

    2. Eyedrops are often necessary to supplement the lack of lubrication on the ocular surfaces. Use the eyedrops recommended by your optometrist. Just like there are many types of lubricants for mechanical devices amd machines, there are many types of lubricants for the eyes.

    3. Lid cleaning pads are another way to keep the eyelids functioning properly. These are especially useful for chronic crusting around the eyelashes. Needing to use cleaning pads is not a comment on general hygiene; the glands within the eyelids are simply prone to harboring bacteria and other micro-organisms.

Use the “Pomodoro” method to take scheduled breaks, even with hobbies. This is meant as a way to increase productivity, and periodic breaks would have the additional benefit of rejuvenating the eyes..

Limit screen use before bedtime. This is not only easier on the eyes, it may actually help with better sleeps!

For habitual readers, consider listening to audio books. People who love to read can be resistant to this idea, but there is no shame in listening to something instead of reading something. This way, the reader can truly relax or use the time to go for a walk or perform some other light exercise

Adjust the environment for the eyes. For instance, aim air vents away from the face when driving. Make sure that devices like fans or CPAP machines do not blow directly into the eyes.

Keep hydrated, not only by drinking enough fluids but also monitoring diet and exercise.

Consider taking Omega-3 supplements, they may help.

Wear eye protection when working around dirt or dust or smoke

  • A referral to an ophthalmologist or other specialist occurs when the optometrist needs an opinion regarding eye surgery, or some other ocular health problem.

Once the referral is received, the specialist’s office will make a decision about the urgency. A referral does not necessarily mean that any surgical or medical treatment is actually needed.

The wait times for referrals can be long - often several months. Subsequent surgical bookings can take months after that. If your case is truly urgent, it will be expedited by the specialist.

If you have been referred to specialist’s office, they will contact you directly about the upcoming appointment. If you have not heard from the specialist’s office after 3 weeks from being referred, please let us know. We check up on the status of our referrals routinely.

Our local ophthalmologists include the following:

    Dr. K. Clapson (250) 941-8838

    Dr. G. Hoar (250) 941-8838

    Dr. S. Kulkarni (250) 890-0089

    Dr. S. Shaver (250) 334-4030

  • You can use your own frames and put new lenses in them, we have the machinery available to do that. This comes with some risk, especially if the frame is not under warranty. We usually require a signed waiver before proceeding. There is no guarantee for the life of the frame, and replacing an old frame can be difficult.

We collect old glasses for donation on behalf of the local Lion’s Club.
