Dr. Alex Kennedy
Dr. Kennedy was fortunate to grow up in Victoria while his father was stationed in the navy at CFB Esquimalt. He has been wearing eyeglasses ever since undergoing eye surgery as a toddler. As a child, he frequently broke his eyeglasses and was a frequent visitor to the eye doctor. While studying sciences at university, he developed an interest in optics and customer service while working for various opticians. After graduating from the University of Waterloo in 1994, he practiced in Edmonton and relocated back to Vancouver Island in 2007. He spends time with his daughters and partner Jacqueline. You may see Dr. Kennedy around town playing various sports, running, cycling, or playing trivia games! He contributes to the Wounded Warriors charity (his father was badly injured while serving in the Navy) as well as sponsoring an annual bursary in memory of his late wife Beverley.
Dr. Laura Thomasen
Dr Laura Thomasen graduated Optometry from the University of Melbourne in 2009. She practiced in Cairns and Port Douglas for four years (weekends were spent diving the Great Barrier Reef!) before moving home to Canada. Originally from Ontario, she was drawn to Vancouver Island’s outdoor lifestyle and milder climate. Laura and her husband stumbled upon the Comox Valley and knew it was the perfect place to put down roots. She joined Mosaic Optometry in January 2014.
Laura enjoys practicing full scope optometry and especially loves being able to utilise the latest and greatest technology to diagnose and treat eye disease. She loves getting to know new patients and seeing returning patients year after year. It’s a privilege to help people achieve their best vision possible.
Laura’s family is proud to call Cumberland home and they are happiest when in the Cumberland forest hiking or biking. When she’s not outdoors or chasing children around she loves knitting, interior design and cuddling their two dogs - Walter and Stella.
Dr. Tammy Mui
Dr. Mui has been practicing Optometry for nine years and has been working at Mosaic since July 2019, and loves math and science. She's originally from Vancouver, but decided to move to Courtenay after finishing her degree at the University of Waterloo and loves the peaceful Island life. On sunny days she enjoys kayaking, hiking and playing tennis. Otherwise you'll find her reading, crocheting, learning pottery and watercolour, and relaxing with some TV. Her favourite part of her job is meeting lovely and interesting new people - if you have any hike or book recommendations she'd love to hear them!
Dr. Carla Bunn
Dr. Bunn is originally from Alberta and has been living in the Comox Valley since 2016. She studied at the University of Calgary for her Bachelor’s degree and the University of Waterloo for her Optometry degree, and in her spare time obtained her Masters degree at McMaster University in 2020! Dr. Bunn enjoys spending her free time with her family and partner Matt. She volunteered with the humane society/ SPCA in Alberta and hopes to continue here on the island. Dr. Carla Bunn is happy to be at Mosaic and she looks forward to seeing new and returning patients.
